Bird Carving
by Lucy Stanyar

It all started in the fall of 1983, when Lucy announced that she could probably make a duck like the one on their fireplace mantle.

She went to the shed, found some wood and over a period of time carved out 7 beautiful ducks which she stained and varathaned. It wasn't until much later that someone asked her if it was difficult working with red pine, (not a carving wood). She then discovered white pine and basswood and things became much easier. Her first works were more along the lines of folk art which slowly evolved over time to become the beautiful lifelike carving which she does now.

Lucy left home at a young age to explore the interior of British Columbia and Alaska.

She now makes her home on a private lake in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec.

It is here that Lucy has been able to study the birds in their natural habitat, enabling her to give the lifelike quality to her carvings for which she has become recognized. Her specialty is songbird carving.

Although Lucy is a certified farrier, she has traded her blacksmith tools for those of a woodcarver.

It wasn't until the fall of 1988 that she started realistic carving. Since then she has won numerous ribbons and awards for her works. Unfortunately Lucy has developed an allergy to the wood dust and has given up the carving.

Lucy's carvings have been purchased by private collectors as well as by various Corporations and Government Departments.
